From 50 for 3 in the 8th over, Lower Corentyne Secondary failed to kick off as the Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary bowlers kept a tight rein on the remaining batsmen with Hemchand Sukhai claiming 2 for 17, Jermaine Pollard, Emmanuel Seecharran and Keon Hooper took one wicket each.
Corentyne Comprehensive needing to score 84 in 15 overs to secure the title for the first time, was restricted to 83 for 9 in response; Emmanuel Seecharran led with 22 not out while extras contributed a healthy 32.
Needing to score six runs in the last over bowled by Justin Gobin, Corentyne Comprehensive only got five as Emmanuel Seecharran only scored a single off the last ball with two required.
Ezekiel Kempadoo claimed 2 for 15 runs.
With the tie, a super over was required, Corentyne Comprehensive scored 12; Avishask Ramnarine scoring all the runs off the left arm spinner Keith Simpson. Lower Corentyne Secondary could only manage 11 for both wickets as Jermaine Pollard kept his nerve.
Karran Rajpaul was run out for 3 attempting a single which would have resulted in another tie much to the relief of Corentyne Comprehensive’s supporters. Emmanuel Seecharran was named best batsman while Ezekiel Kempadoo was named best bowler and Man-of-the-finals.
The winners, runners-up and Players-of-the-finals received trophies while the best batter and bowler received medallions and special prizes.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster praised the teams for providing a high class performance to entertain the large crowd and also praised the commitment and passion of the young cricketers, something which is sadly missing in West Indies Cricket.
Foster urged the attentive school children to always Say No to Drugs and Suicide and to stay in school and obtain an educational background. He also expressed gratitude to the Management of GBTI for their sponsorship of the tournament and for their continued confidence in the work of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation.
The players were urged to support the Bank by opening accounts at the Port Mourant branch. GBTI Port Mourant Manager, Mr. Ghoeblall Mahadeo and members of the staff distributed the prizes to the different winners.
Members of all four teams in the finals participated in an Anti-drugs and Pro-education March before the games started. President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union Mr. Mark Lyte spoke at the opening ceremony and spoke on the importance of education and the need to mix sports and education.
