Hopetown Warriors came prepared to fight on Sunday and fought all the way to maintain their unbeaten run when they disposed of Fyrish Black Sharks in a close encounter,(48-45) in the latest match of the second annual Anamayah Memorial Inter Club First Division Basketball competition for teams in Berbice at the Fyrish Basketball Court, Corentyne, Berbice.
Both teams went into the game desperate for the win with the Warriors eager to take on the Sharks. The two teams went after each other from the first whistle with the score going neck and neck. At the end of the first quarter the visiting Hopetown Warriors were in front 16-12.
The close encounter continued through the second segment with the half ending 27-24 again in the Warriors’ favour.
The Fyrish Black Sharks made a desperate effort to burst through the Warriors’ defence in the third quarter, but the Warriors were prepared for the battle and held on with a one point lead 37-36.
The final segment saw the teams giving it their all, but the Warriors were more desperate for the triumph as they came out winners 48-45.
Leading the way for the Hopetown Warriors was Jerrol Allen with 13 points, while Trevon Lewis and Sherlan Gillis supported with 8 points each.
Linden Joseph with 15 points and Keevon Williams with 14 were the top scorers for the Black Sharks.
The win has propelled the Hopetown Warriors to the semifinal where they will take on Smythfield Rockers. The other semifinal will see New Amsterdam Warriors playing Rose Hall Jammers in another game.
The top teams and outstanding individual players will receive trophies and other incentives including cash. The tournament is being coordinated by Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
