Medical practitioner Satyendra Khemraj made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The doctor and his mother Chandrana Khemraj were charged with having 15 9mm rounds of ammunition in their possession on February 20, at Subryanville without being the holders of firearm licence.
The duo was also charged with having one 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol in their possession at Subryanville without being the holders of firearm licence.
Satyendra Khemraj was charged with having 5 9mm round of live ammunition, 1371 rounds of 7.62 and 39 rounds of ammunition along with 100 rounds of .223 and 22 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Satyendra Khemraj, Chandrana Khemraj and several other persons were arrested in connection with the discovery of the large ammo cache. However, according to Police prosecutor Michael Grant, the other individuals were released from custody because of a confession made by the two accused.
The charge states on the day in question, acting on information, the police went to 12 Austin Street, Campbellville, where they made contact with Satyendra Khemraj and told him the reason for their visit. Grant related that during the search the police found a quantity of ammunition and showed same to Satyendra Khemraj. They also told him of the offence and arrested him.
The prosecutor further informed the court that Satyendra Khemraj was then taken to the house of Mrs. Chandrana Kemraj, which is situated at Fifth Avenue, Subryanville. He said that they saw her throwing an object through the southern window. Upon inspection, the police found the object to be a gun.
Further checks were made in Satyendra Khemraj’s room where more ammunition was unearthed.
Attorney Nigel Hughes, representing Mrs. Khemraj, informed the court that his client has an unblemished record. He said that she suffers from very low blood pressure. Counsel argued that the woman was not “physically” found with the ammunition in her possession, and there is nothing to link her to the allegations.
Hughes also stated that the woman is not a flight risk and she is willing to surrender her passport if required.
Grant objected to bail, citing the nature and prevalence of the offence. He also pointed out the penalty that such an offence attracts.
The prosecutor further asked the court to have the defendants remanded since the firearms that were found during the raid are currently being tested to investigate if they were used to commit any unlawful acts.
Magistrate Sewnarine –Beharry upheld the prosecution’s request to not have the defendants released on bail, hence remanding them to prison.
The matter was transferred to Court 2, where Magistrate Ann McLennan is presiding. The magistrate ordered that the defendants return to court on March 3.
The individuals were busted with the large sum of ammunition last Friday. The bust stemmed from information received by the police, which stated that Satyendra Khemraj was dealing with arms and ammunition. He is the Director of a Medical Clinic located at Austin Street, Campbellville.
