Thirteen years ago, when the Kashif and Shanghai Entertainment group was on the road seeking sponsorship for their yearly football extravaganza they received favourable support from several businesses including Cell Phone Shack of Middle Street Georgetown. Ever since then, the latter entity has continued to be an integral part of the support group.
Recently, the K&S duo convened at Club 704, Lamaha and Albert Streets, Georgetown and was joined by Chairman of the NC, Clinton Urling, sponsors and other football affiliates for the grand launch of the 25th edition of the tournament. Among those attending this function was Managing Director of Cell Phone Shack, Christopher Low Koan, who had pledged to continue supporting the tournament.
True to his word, the young entrepreneur invited Mr. Major to his business place, 176 Middle Street Georgetown, yesterday to tie up the loose ends pertaining to the sponsorship deal and hand over the requisite cheque.
Mr. Low Koan expressed delight in once again receiving the opportunity to contribute to the championships saying that he is quite confident that the K&S duo would once again put the modalities in place for a delightful tournament.
He wished the group well even as he implored the support of other corporate entities as well as the sports pundits to make the tournament a huge success. A senior staff of Cell Phone Shack, Pream Sudargan, was also at the function and informed that his firm would be sponsoring under their Plum Phone, a line he assured is fast growing, affordable and is as efficient as the Samsung device.
Mr. Sudargan also said that his firm stocks spare parts as well as services and repairs the phone. Cell Phone Shack has also donated 20 Plum Phones for gate prizes and the organizers will soon reveal how patrons could win these instruments.
Mr. Major expressed gratitude to Mr. Low Koan while assuring him that the gift meant a lot to the effective promotion of the tournament and by extension, the sport. The K&S Director further said that this year’s tournament promises to be exciting when the action kicks off on Friday March 20 up to the final game scheduled for the National Stadium Providence on Sunday April 5.
Sixteen teams will vie for the top spot including Alpha United, Pele, Western Tigers, Rhythm Squad, GDF, GFC, Victoria Kings, Mahaica Determinators, New Amsterdam United, Slingerz FC, Den Amstel FC, Grove Hi Tec, Agricola Red Triangle, Winners’ Connection, Hi Stars and Bartica Beacon.
Matches would be played at several venues around Georgetown as well as in the rural areas such as DCC, where the tournament will be officially launched with a march past, Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Uitvlugt and Leonora with the grand finals taking place at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5.
The winning team will cart off two million dollars with the runners up winning half that amount. The third and fourth place prizes are five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
