Even the staunchest boxing pundits were doubtful of Clive Atwell’s ability to
bounce back to prominence after losing out to WBC World Champion, Johnny Gonsalves and Australian pugilist, Kye Mackenzie but the Guyanese world rater proved that he was made of sterner stuff when he shrugged aside those losses and rebounded with a victory over Jamaican ‘Contender’ Champion, Sakima Mullings, in an exciting 12 rounder, merely 4 days ago.
Atwell admitted that proper preparation was indeed the catalyst to his victory and such preparations could only have been possible through the input of conscientious members of the corporate community that provided much needed funding.
And so it was that two other corporate citizens have answered the call to support the aspiring world champion in his onward journey and Atwell visited Aubrey Barker Street, South Ruimveldt, yesterday where firstly, Courtney Benn (Jnr.) of CB General Contracting Services made a tangible donation to the local boxing champion.
Moments later, Atwell visited Oasis Water, the business of Wayne Forde also in Aubrey Barker Street, where the latter individual donated a similar gift to Atwell. Mr. Benn said that he is an
ardent boxing fan and even relived the days of good competitive boxing at the then National Sports Hall and National Park.
He bemoaned the drop in action packed duels but noted that Atwell has risen above his circumstances to seal off a place among the top guns in the sport. The young businessman feels that Atwell is a dedicated fighter, deserves much support and as such, he (Mr. Benn) had no reservations in rendering support.
Mr. Benn admitted that his contribution may be insufficient to propel Atwell to world acclaim and called on other members of the corporate community to reach out to the aspiring world champion in assisting him to achieve his goals.
Over at Oasis Water, Mr. Forde made a similar contribution and added his voice to the cause. He said that he frequents the boxing matches and (last week) was privileged to see Atwell at work as he clinically fashioned a victory over Mullings.
“Atwell is the perfect example of what could be achieved through hard work and dedication and Oasis Water, a refreshing drink for all sportspersons, feels obliged to render this level of support,” exhorted Mr. Forde as the cheque exchanged hands.
Mr. Atwell was truly delighted by the show of support and expressed such sentiments to his benefactors. “Adequate funding is very important to my advancement but there are times when I am forced to prepare devoid of proper support,” Atwell revealed.
He said that on numerous occasions he felt defeated and wanted to quit. “It is the input of generous persons like you guys that have kept me hoping and persevering,” Atwell exhorted. He is expected to leave Guyana shortly for his base in Dominica where he resumes training.
