A group of concerned local Muslim Brothers, led by city businessman, Reaaz Khan, converged at Eccles, East Bank Demerara on Sunday to offer prayers to Allah Sa for their slain Muslim brother and sisters
(all students) in the United States of America.
The victims, newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, a University of North Carolina dental student, and his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and Yusor’s sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, were reportedly gunned down, “execution style” during a hate session by an individual named Craig Stephen Hicks.
Sunday’s event was the latest in a series of outpouring of grief around the world as local Muslim brothers and sisters joined with the newly crowned king of Saudi Arabia in prayers over the act.
The session was chaired by Jamal Imran, former Chief Executive Officer of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, while the Deputy Imam of the Queenstown Jamaat made supplication.
According to the organisors, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, by way of a message, extended condolences to Muslims and condemned the atrocity on behalf of the Guyana Government.
On February 10, last, Hicks, who had posted anti-religious messages on Facebook and quarreled with neighbours, opened fire on the three victims in what has been termed a dispute over parking and possibly a hate crime.
Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, a full-time paralegal student from Chapel Hill, was charged with first-degree murder for the killings, which drew international condemnation.
The shooting sparked thousands of comments on social media with many posters assailing what they called a lack of news coverage.
“I guess that Muslims are only newsworthy when behind the gun, not in front,” tweeted a poster who goes by the handle @biebersrivals.
Muslim activists demanded authorities investigate a possible motive of religious hatred.
“We understand the concerns about the possibility that this was hate-motivated and we will exhaust every lead to determine if that is the case,” Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said in a statement.
According to the organisors of the local prayer session, “It is difficult to understand and accept this as a civilized act and the world mourns with the surviving families. To witness the lives of these students snuffed out is indeed a terrible blow.”
The local organisors are calling on other Muslim Brothers and Sisters to come together and join with them in solidarity and call for “swift justice”.
The brothers are also calling on those who are doing injustice to innocent lives and properties in the Name of Islam and ultimately the Sacred Name of ALLAH SA must desist from such evil immediately.
