Georgetown is expected to be the scene of vibrant costumes, lively music and excited crowds, as 30 bands hit the streets today for the Costume and Float Parade in celebration of Guyana’s 45th Republic Anniversary.
This year’s festivities will see thousands marching to the theme “One People, One Culture, One Celebration.
The Costume and Float Parade is scheduled to begin at Parade Ground, and will conclude at the National Park, where a panel of judges will judge them on creativity and performance.
Bands will have the opportunity to compete in either the large band, medium band or small band categories, which will consist of participants ranging from the tens to well into the hundreds.
With a mix of participants from the private and public sectors, bands are expected to incorporate elements that highlight Guyana’s people, culture, achievements, economic sectors, natural resources and national wonders. The Mashramani Parade will also include five party trucks that will traverse the same route as the floats.
In the days leading up to the parade, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport reassured the public that the Ministry is prepared for this year’s activities, as their Mashramani Committee has been making preparations since last year.
He also expressed satisfaction at the work the committee has committed in pulling off the grand costume and float parade, describing this year’s entries as “very innovative” as citizens can anticipate a lot of colours and creativity today.
Additionally, the Minister said that numerous safety checks were made on the parade route with assurances from the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Services and Guyana Power and Light that the parade route is ready for celebrations.
Before festive Mashramani 2015 activities begin, there will also be flag raising ceremonies in all 10 of the Administrative Regions to commemorate Guyana’s Republican status.
