The management of Kaieteur News is examining legal options after several instances of its website coming under attack in recent weeks.
According to the website’s host, the site has been experiencing large amount of unusual requests, the majority from China. The requests are consistent with an attack designed to bring down the website.
The cyber attacks come at a time when General Elections are to be held on May 11 and when the website, www.kaieteurnewsonline.com, has been showing significant increases in online readership in recent times.
It is the most visited website in the country.
The newspaper has been complaining of problems with uploading and of significant technical issues.
The newspaper is now preparing to seek help from the Chinese Embassy in Georgetown and the police. A request will be made to involve InterPol also.
Significantly, the attacks were made around midnight on a number of occasions and according to logs made of the events by the server host which is based overseas.
The logs of the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses will be among some of the records to be given to the local police and the Chinese Embassy.
In recent days, another online news outfit, InewsGuyana, reported that it too has come under attack.
Kaieteur News is now examining indications that a local group affiliated with a political party is working in tandem with groups overseas to attack the website.
Kaieteur News was told that there are various groups overseas which could be hired to carry out systematic attacks on particular websites.
Using hackers spread in a network across the globe, they would send large amount of requests to a target website, overwhelming it and causing it to crash.
According to Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall, the newspaper will not be daunted by any attacks, regardless of the forms that they come under.
“We have stood the test of time. We have paid the ultimate price and we will continue to do our work without fear.”
