An injured and frustrated GUYSUCO cane harvester visited Kaieteur News’ Saffon Street office on Thursday, last, to vent about his current dilemma with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).
The 39-year-old father of eight, Quason Pellew, brought copies of his NIS card, medical claims, x-rays of his injuries and photos of all his children, and told this newspaper that he has for the past two months been denied his fortnightly industrial injury benefits from the insurance company.
Pellew, who resides at 1125 Bare Root, Bachelors Adventure, East Coast Demerara, explained that on October 8 last, he and approximately 60 other cane harvesters were seated in a small truck heading to the work site. While driving along the Railway Embankment, the truck seat broke and Pellew sustained a torn ligament in his left knee.
The distraught man said that he was sent to both St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Woodlands Hospital for medical evaluation in the wake of the incident. He explained that the severity of his injuries prevented him from going back to work, and qualified him for benefits for industrial injuries from the NIS. He has since been providing NIS with regular medical updates on his condition, in order to uplift his money.
However, the still injured man claims to have only received benefits for the months of October, November and early December.
“Is since last year December I ain’t get a cent from NIS. I told them at GUYSUCO what was going on and they said that is NIS have to deal with that because the matter is out of their hands.”
Pellew stated that he has been working with the sugar company for over 13 years, and has never been in any problems on the job. He said that he inquired from the relevant persons at NIS about his situation, and was told that his documents are being reviewed by the Medical Board.
“I is a hard- working man, and it hurting me fuh know that I can’t provide for my family. You mean is since last year December my documents at the Medical Board and they can’t done with it yet?”
A tearful Pellew confessed that he has been unable to provide for his children ever since, and is very depressed about his situation. He said that he has been robbed of what he rightfully deserves, since he has over the years been paying NIS to take care of incidents like this. He is now unable to get what he has been paying for.
Pellew, who is at wits end, said that he contacted NIS yesterday, and was told to come in to the Brickdam location. After being instructed to sit and wait for most of the day, the man said that he was told he would not be able to receive any benefits this month, because his documents are still at the Medical Board.
When asked to comment on the matter, NIS General Manager, Ms. Doreen Nelson said that she would have to research and investigate the matter before she could comment.
