Permaul and Yaw are respective sportsmen of the year
Following hours of intense deliberations by several editors of news organs and other influential personalities,
middle distance athlete, Cassie George, was adjudged the top sportswoman, both in the junior and senior categories, while the Guyana Rugby Football Union ran away with several awards.
National cricketer, Veerasammy Premaul earned the votes that segregated him from among several other sportsmen to clinch the top (senior) spot, while racecar driver, Kristian Jeffrey, drove off with the runner-up prize. Jason Yaw won the prize for the junior sportsman with Shemron Hetmyer clinching the runners up spot.
Squash player, Akeila Wiltshire, copped the runner-up junior sports woman accolade, while in the senior department, the evergreen athlete and bodybuilder Alisha Fortune was the runner-up.
Rugby player/coach, Theodore Henry, copped the top award for the sports coach, while the efforts of officials of the Guyana Rugby Football Union were noted and that entity was awarded the sports association of the year award coupled with the most improved association accolade. Vidushi Persaud received the female sports official award, while the hard working President of the Guyana Power lifting Federation and Guyana Rugby Football Union, Peter Green, copped the Male Sports Official award as his organization extended their dominance from the field to the awards.
Calvin Thomas was singled out as the best performing athlete with a disability, while Media practitioners were
also among the top achievers. Sports reporter, Emmerson Campbell, was adjudged the best in the print media category, while Avenash Ramzan edged out several of his colleagues to clinch the sports journalist prize in the non print media. For the third year running, Orlando Charles has clicked his way to the top, earning the prize as the best sports journalist photographer award.
These notable sports personalities will be aptly rewarded when the National Sports Commission stages the prize giving ceremony next month at the National Cultural Centre.
