Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a father and his two sons to jail after it was alleged they had in their possession an illegal firearm.
It is alleged that on February 18, at Kuru Kuru, Linden Soesdyke Highway, Oswald Dass Snr, Oswald Dass Jnr and Ivan Dass had in their possession a 19mm pistol and one 12 gauge shotgun without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The three men were also accused of having three rounds of 20 gauge cartridges in their possession.
Attorney Asa Stuart Shepherd appeared on the men’s behalf. Counsel informed the court that Oswald Dass Snr, 86, is a businessman and he was brought before the court 15 years ago charged with the possession of marijuana; however the charge was dismissed.
Shepherd further stated that Ivan Dass, 33 is a mechanic and he has no antecedents before the court. He went on to say that Oswald Dass Jnr, 21 is a farmer by profession.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru’s facts stated that on the day in question policemen acting on information armed themselves with GYD$320,000 and approached Oswald Dass Snr, to purchase a firearm. He said that the man returned with the other two accused and the ammunition was found in their possession.
The Prosecutor objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. He also pointed out that if the defendants should be granted bail, special reasons would have to be provided to the court.
The trio will make their next court appearance on February 24, at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
