Dear Editor,
This is a call and a plea for parents, students, educators across the country, general and civic society to show support and rally behind the students, staff and faculty of UG who are represented by Mr. J. Griffith (University of Guyana Student Society – UGSS), Mr. Bruce Haynes (UG staff -University of Guyana Workers Union – UGWU) and Dr. M. Ifill, (University of Guyana Senior Staff Association, UGSSA), respectively.
It is urgent that we show that we can demand much needed changes in a universal commodity such as education that will benefit not only the current students, but future generations of Guyanese.
We must make this demand not only of the ruling PPP but also of the opposition parties of APNU-AFC which are represented on the politically imposed dictatorial UG council. The ruling political class’s philosophy after Independence has resulted in an on-going deconstruction of our society. Education, one of our most valued assets, has been depreciated beyond recognition. We have to take a stand and stop this devaluation of ourselves and our communities.
We have traditionally valued education deeply, especially university education, regardless of political stripes, cultural heritage or class. Education was our chance of being a great equalizer.
Allowing society and educational standards to deteriorate beyond any recognition is detrimental to both UG and all of Guyana’s future.
As “UG goes so does the rest of Guyana” is here. We are at this crossroads.
Parents of UG students, parents in general, civic society, the public can help in supporting the demands of UG’s student, staff and faculty. The much needed changes should be implemented now. Empty promises have been made before and nothing done, in fact the mutilation accelerated
Let us together make this demand for better education for current and future generations.
