Berbice and Demerara have secured their places in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter County Under-15 50-over tournament following victories in their final preliminary round matches yesterday. Berbice
defeated the President’s XI by 82 runs at Everest.
Batting first, the Berbicians posted 196-4 off their allotted overs. Junior Sinclair and Brandon Mangal gave their team a solid start with a first wicket stand of 138. The pair gradually grew in confidence, picking singles and doubles almost at will.
Following a brief interruption by rain, the duo stepped up the scoring rate with Sinclair taking boundaries off Satesh Badeo and Bharrat Bhopaul. Mangal who was put down off Joel Spooner early on, drove Leon Swami through long-off before pulling Sachin Singh to mid-wicket boundary.
The pair continued to keep the score board ticking and after reaching his half century off 120 balls Sinclair opened his shoulders hitting a few more boundaries before he was taken off Sachin Singh for 70 (5×4) in the 35th over.
Alex Algoo was then run out without addition to the score. Garfield Benjamin joined Mangal and added 42 for the third wicket with Mangal who reached his fifty off 130 balls with three fours. Benjamin slammed three fours, but was lbw to Spooner for 26 while Mangal followed shortly for 62.
Andre Bissoondyal and Kelvin Anderson were unbeaten on four and three respectively. Spooner, Bhopaul and Singh took one wicket each. Pacer Haifa Walters induced Anil Singh to edge a delivery to slip in third over as the President’s XI lost their first wicket with the score on 21. Marvin Prashad (01) was then run out before Sachin Singh and Yodister Persaud frustrated the opposition somewhat with a third wicket stand of 66. Singh executed a number of handsome drives.
He struck Kelvin Omroa for boundaries before hitting Navindra Persaud through long-off. However skipper Anderson got the much needed breakthrough – he produced a sharp turning delivery which took the top of Singh’s off-stump; he went for 46 (8×4).
Yodister Persaud was then lbw to Omroa for 15 leaving the score at 87-4. The rest of the batting showed little fight with only Melvin Singh (10) managing double figures; the President’s XI were sent packing for 114 in 44.5 overs. Navindra Persaud claimed 4-25 while Walters and Anderson had two each.
At Wales, on the West Bank of Demerara, Demerara hammered Essequibo by seven wickets. Essequibo took first strike and scored 78-7 after the game was reduced to 25 overs due to rain. Orlando Jailall stroked 33 while Ashmead Nedd snared 4-13.
Demerara replied with 79-3 in 19.1 overs. Robin Williams and Adrian Hinds got 25 each. Mahendra Dindyal picked up 2-20. The final will be played tomorrow at Wales.
