Slain bus driver and ex-cop, Beepat Taijram, had a sordid past. In addition to the information revealed so far, the man was involved in a number of unsavory matters according to the police.
Taijram was among four men nabbed in a car in Berbice on December 23, when the police stopped the slow moving vehicle on the Whim, Corentyne, Berbice Public Road.
The four men in the car were identified as an interdicted police man who was charged twice before with arm robbery, two ex-soldiers and the dreadlocks driver. The driver turned out to be Anthony “High Grade” Morgan who has since been charged with three counts of armed robbery. The interdicted police man was identified as Taijram. One of the ex-soldiers was later identified as the now wanted Nicholas James, 23, who escaped from police custody at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) recently.
He was shot in the buttocks while executing a robbery on the Popeye’s Restaurant on Vlissengen Road.
James was shot by a plainclothes rank when he and three of his accomplices tried to rob the fast food outlet. He demanded all customers to lie on the floor; he then went to the cashier and demanded the money. The man was admitted to the Georgetown hospital, but for some strange reason was not handcuffed and managed to escape.
James had told this newspaper that he was kidnapped in Parika by two armed men who then shot him and dumped him at the crime scene before escaping in his rented car.
.This newspaper was told that James’ alleged accomplices, who were waiting for him outside the restaurant, escaped when they saw that he had been wounded.
The police in Berbice intercepted a car with four suspects inside including one of their former colleagues and two ex-soldiers.
The police were on patrol around 23:00 hrs on December 23, along the Whim Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, when they spotted a slow moving motor car PPP 1505 with four men inside..
Checks of the vehicle revealed a chopper hidden among some clothing that included numerous long sleeve shirts, socks and kerchiefs.
The three ex-military men were all from Georgetown while Morgan hailed from the Upper Corentyne area. During interrogation, the men all give conflicting reports and were arrested and placed in custody.
The vehicle was checked and returned to the owner. However, the police acting on information subsequently rechecked the vehicle on January 12, and found one .32 Rossi Revolver and five live rounds of .32 ammunition hidden in the roof of the car. Morgan has since been charged with that matter.
Taijram allegedly was kicked out of the force in 2012 for his involvement in a robbery. He was still attending court on a weapons charge at the time of his death.
