Guyanese Sports reporter Calvin Roberts is now at home with his wife after spending over three weeks hospitalized due to kidney failure. He needs a kidney transplant and is waiting on ‘a match’ and is presently on Dialysis
treatment.
A Catheter for Dialysis treatment was implanted and the 43-year-old Roberts need to do three sessions per week. Each session last for four hours and cost $9,000 each.
Roberts, a left-handed batsman and right arm medium pacer, grew up in West Ruimveldt and played second division cricket for South Georgetown side Ace Warriors. He was also a member of Malteenoes where he played a few matches at the under-16 level.
He took over the captaincy of the Guyana Media team from cricket commentator and journalist Sean Devers, who is recovering wonderfully from brain cancer.
In a effort to raise funds for Roberts’ Dialysis treatment a fund raising 40-over game between the Media side and a Port Mourant combination has been planned for 10:00 hrs on Sunday at the Port Mourant ground in Corentyne and according to John Ramsingh, who will lead the Media outfit, all monies derived from sales of a well stocked bar at the match will go towards Robert’s medical bills. President of the Port Mourant Cricket Club Vick Seebarran has given the fund raiser his blessings.
A Senior Sports Reporter at the Guyana Chronicle, Roberts is the father of two teenage sons and was diagnosed with Kidney failure at the Davis Memorial Hospital by Dr Clem McEwan on January 19.
Roberts said he resting and is confident the God will bring him through this little hurdle in his life. “I have faith that God will put me back on my foot again,” Roberts said.
Port Mourant has produced Test players John Trim, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Alvin Kallicharran, Ivan Madray and Mahendra Nagamootoo, and among the players expected to turn out for the Berbice side on Sunday are former National under-19 player Troy Gonsalves, Berbice player Rajiv Ivan, Demetri Cameron, Yudendra Harinarine, Daniel Samaroo and Samuel Kishnasammy.
The Media side will include Ramsingh, Ishaka Jackman, Cliffton Ross, Avinash Ramzan, Daniel Singh and Rajeev Bisnauth and admission is free.
Devers, who is overseas covering Guyana’s matches in WICB First-Class Franchise tournament for Radio and the Kaieteur News, wished Roberts a speedy recovery.
“I am a living testimony to God’s might and while I did not receive anything from the Sport Ministry when I did my Surgery even though I represented Guyana in Cricket, Calvin works for the State Media and am confident that the Sports Minister will contribute towards saving his life,” Devers added.
