Dear Editor,
Where there is incentive there is also treachery.’’ “Those that value position above all are like thieves in the night; without mercy”.
I realised that the very quotes of this time could have been put there to foreshadow what is to come; perhaps they are signs from the past.
On Saturday the AFC and APNU announced a union that is supposed to be the panacea for all of Guyana’s ills. I read somewhere that the agreement signed by the two stated that if the union was to succeed at the upcoming elections then the leader of the APNU will be the President and the leader of the AFC would hold the Prime Ministerial post.
This new dispensation appears to have left another APNU coalition member out in the cold; the WPA. Rupert Roopnaraine has become the victim in the sudden fire of convenient love being described as ‘’an effort to establish a sense of national unity in Guyana”.
Many would recall that Roopnaraine was initially touted to retain the Prime Ministerial candidate spot at the upcoming elections. This was after reports surfaced that he would make way for a much younger, vibrant candidate. Recent events have however suggested that the relationship once shared within the house is headed to an end. And the question begs; why wasn’t Roopnaraine given the post as ‘promised’ before talks about coalition with the AFC?
Moreover; why was it so necessary for the post to be given to Nagamootoo instead?
I believe we must carefully assess the actions of both APNU leader David Granger and the AFC and thoroughly collect the evidence that stands amidst, as verily I say unto you that it is not by mistake or accident that poor Rupert was omitted from the grand ball.
What is now clear is that the W.P.A has lost in its gamble. It is even safer to say that the party was sacrificed against their will as Granger, while promising to do what it takes not for the country’s best interest appears to be more concerned with self interest.
So while we all wonder what’s next for the party of the great Dr Walter Rodney we must also be concerned for Guyana’s fate should the APNU/PNC/AFC union succeed given what it has done to the WPA.
My great grandmother always spoke of the importance of family; figuratively, collectively and politically under the constraints and definitive borders set out by the term coalition we see here that a member of a family has not been allowed to sit at the table. Literally, Roopnaraine does not even possess a seat at the table at which he once held a high place.
After all that has existed here now and before time the two quotes continue to play in my head.
All for your consideration
