The four surviving teams in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship will battle tonight for a spot in the final
when the semi-finals are staged at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda from 19:00hrs.
This evening’s showdown will see Fruta Conquerors play Western Tigers at 19:00hrs, while Slingerz will tackle Pele in the feature attraction at 21:00hrs. The final is fixed for Sunday along with the third place playoff.
The winner of this tournament will collect $1,000,000 donated by Banks DIH Ltd, while the runners-up receive $300,000. The 3rd and 4th place finishers will take home $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
This evening’s battles are expected to be intense with all teams eying the $1M payday. Conquerors and Western Tigers are two balanced teams and an exciting contest is anticipated to open proceedings. The Tigers are known for their big game temperament and fans can expect them to come firing.
Slingerz have had the tournament favourite tag from the ‘get go’, but Pele are not a side to be taken lightly based on their record and the contest should be a humdinger. Among some of the key players on show in the games are Konata Manning, Dwain Jacobs, Vurlon Mills, Tichard Joseph and Devon Millington.
Apart from the prize money there are the individual awards to contend for. The tournament highest goal scorer will take away a 3-piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon. Several players are still in the reckoning for that accolade and prize.
While Adrian Adams (NA), Rawle Haynes (Police) and Maxton Adams (Ann’s Grove) all have three and are locked at the top of the table; Vurlon Mills and Julian Wade (Slingerz), Deron Benjamin, Michael Pedro (Western Tigers), Konata Manning (Pele) and Daniel Wilson (Conquerors) all have two apiece and are still in the reckoning and can take the top scorer prize. A total of 66 goals have been scored so far.
Trophies put up by Alfred King PS Ministry of Sport will go to the MVP and the DeSinco Trading Trophy will be given to the Best Goalkeeper.
Apart from Banks DIH and AH&L Kissoon, several other corporate entities have pitched in to ensure the tournament is successful including MACORP, Busta, Sterling Products, John Fernandes, GT&T, TCL, CIDI and the Vieira brothers of Houston. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Courtney Benn have also chipped in. Ricks and Sari and Keishars have donated hampers for the outstanding performers.
Meanwhile, on the day of the final on, an exhibition game starting at 17:00hrs between Police and Monedderlust of West Berbice for the Commander Clifton Hicken trophy will be contested. This will be followed by the third place playoff and final.
