Demerara registered a five wicket win over Berbice while Essequibo thumped the President’s XI by 18 runs when the second round of matches in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter County Under-15 50-over tournament
concluded yesterday.
Berbice were routed for 132 in 40 overs after they elected to bat in lovely sunshine at Wales. Opener Brandon Mangal looked positive as he smashed left arm pacer Dequain Banfield for two fours in the first over, but the pacer provided his team with the breakthrough by having Junior Sinclair (03) caught at first slip by Ashmead Nedd with the score on 19.
Mangal was then caught and bowled by pacer Qumar Torrington for 13 before Banfield uprooted the stumps of Garfield Banjamin (04). Berbice then found themselves in further trouble as medium pacer Alphius Bookie sent back Alex Algoo (02) and Andre Bissoondyal (04) leaving the score at 55-5.
Kevlon Anderson and Seon Glascow added 28 for the sixth wicket, but just as they appeared set to bat their team out of difficulty, Glascow was run out for 12 attempting an ill advised single. Nedd then trapped Kelvin Omroa (00) lbw before Haifa Walters who ended unbeaten on 16 (1×4) and Anderson beefed up the total somewhat with an eight wicket stand of 43.
Anderson timed the ball well and rotated the strike nicely before poor communication between the wickets resulted in him being run out for 35 (1×4). Torrington then wrapped up the innings, ending with 3-24 while Bookie had 2-14 and
Banfield 2-29.
Opener Robin Williams took boundaries off pacers Walters and Cheddi Boodhoo to get his team innings going, but Berbice struck shortly after with the wickets of Avin Gangadin (03) and Adrian Hinds (02). However, the level-headed Williams and Alphius Bookie stabilized the innings with a third wicket partnership of 76.
The introduction of spin didn’t prevent Williams from playing his shots. He pulled Glascow through mid-wicket and drove Omroa for boundaries. Bookie was content to play the supporting role, but was quick to take advantage of the bad balls.
Man-of-the-match Williams brought up his well deserved half century off 111 balls before he was run out for 54; his innings contained six fours. The home team then lost Nedd (14) and Jeremiah Scott (00) before Chandra Mohan (02*) and Bookie who ended on 38 off 138 balls with three fours saw their team home in 42.2 overs, ending on 133-5. Glascow took 2-17 and Walters 1-18.
At Eve Leary, Essequibo was bowled out for 125 in 40 overs, batting first. Skipper Orlando Jailall stroked 43 (5×4) and Bomeshwar Ramdahin cracked 20 (3×4). Sachin Singh captured 3-8 and Satesh Basdeo 3-27.
The President’s XI were cruising at 78-2 in reply, before a spirited fight back from the Essequibians led by Ramdahin and Mahendra Dindyal gave them victroy. Ramdahin who picked up the man of the match award, bagged 5-29 off nine overs and Dindyal snared 3-28 off 8.1 overs as the President’s XI were sent packing for 107 in 28.1 overs. Anil Singh scored 31 (3×4) while Sachin Singh was the only other batsman to reach double figure with 12.
