-Kings, lone Linden team moving forward after Opening Night
By Edison Jefford
Thirteenth ranked, Plaisance Guardians grounded the fourth-ranked Amelia’s Ward Jets Sunday night in a major upset when the 2015 National Basketball Championships: The Road to Mecca II tipped-off
at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Guard, Nikkoloi Smith left Colts for his foundation team, Guardians and was sensational with his game-high 19 points that also included defensive work that produced five steals.
Smith led Guardians to a 66-56 victory against one of last year’s semi-finalists. Forward, Trenton Woolford and guard, Ron Campbell supported with 12 points each for Plaisance Guardians.
Centre, Allister Webster scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Adrian Webster added 15 points and 12 rebounds for double-doubles. Parrish Cadogan had 12 points for the Linden- based team that exited the competition owed to the loss.
The night, which featured four games, began with a lopsided 77-60 win for Georgetown’s Pepsi Sonics against Half Mile Bulls. Guard, Jason Squires dropped 23 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished four assists and made five steals to lead his team.
Squires got assistance from shooting guard, Trevor Smith, who scored 22 points, most of which
came from beyond the arc. Smith also had six rebounds while new addition to the Sonics’ roster, centre, Kurt Elias had a double-double with 11 points and 19 rebounds.
The presence of Pepsi’s ‘big men’ Elias and Earl O’ Neil in the paint made life difficult for Bulls offence, which upcoming guard, Terron Welch led. However, Welch needed much more support, which he didn’t get in a relatively close first half game. Welch and Dennis Niles scored 16 points apiece for Bulls.
Heading to the third quarter leading 42-36, Smith put on a shooting exhibition with three straight jumpers from ‘downtown’ that set the two teams further apart. Bulls never recovered from what turned into an offensive onslaught aimed at pushing the sixth ranked Pepsi team into Round Two of the National Basketball Championships.
Kings became the only Linden-based team to qualify for the Super Eight, following a 77-61 win against Georgetown’s Masters. Abdulla Hamid scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Kings, while Marvin Hartman ended with 13 points and Orin Rose 10 points.
Masters’ Lugard Mohan scored 26 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished seven assists, while Kenrick Thomas had 16 points and eight rebounds. Juma Dennis scored 12 points and took eight ‘boards’ for the underserviced Masters with a depleted bench.
Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters ensured its place in the next round of the competition was also secured with an emphatic statement. Pacesetters trashed Wismar Pistons, which failed to fire in the game, 72-36 taking its feet off the throttle in the third quarter. Pacesetters led 45-13 at halftime.
Shawn Gillis scored 13 points and had seven assists while Randy Richardson completed a double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Michael Turner had 12 points. Pacesetters rested their frontline offence, including guard Travis Burnett, forward Royston Siland and shooting guard, Stephan Gillis with increased bench-time.
Pepsi Sonics, Plaisance Guardians, Kings and Pacesetters have all advanced to the quarterfinals of the Championships. The Road to Mecca II continues tomorrow night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with Georgetown’s Colts United taking on Linden’s Bankers Trust Falcons and New Amsterdam Warriors playing Linden’s Retrieve Raiders.
