Left arm spinner Kelvin Omroa grabbed eight wickets for five runs off 5.5 overs to hand Berbice a comprehensive 177-run win over Essequibo when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) U-15 50-over Inter County
tournament continued yesterday.
Chasing 230, Umroa bowled with good control and variation to send Essequibo crushing for 53 in 21.5 overs at Wales Community Centre ground, West Bank Demerara. Arnold Adams and Amos Sarwan commenced Essequibo reply cautiously adding 26 for the opening stand, but when Adams was bowled by Omroa for 11, the innings went downhill with only Sevond Bess (10*) managing double figures. Adams and Sarwan seemed comfortable against the new ball pair of Haifa Walters and Jevon Schultz, but the introduction of spin brought immediate success for the Berbicians.
Skipper Orlando Jailall was caught off spinner Seon Glascow for one as Essequibo lost their second wicket at 27. Omroa then sent back Sarwan (02), Bhumeshwar Ramkissoon (01) and Bumeshwar Ramdahin (00) leaving the score at 29-5. Mahendra Dindyal (06) hit Glascow for four but played across to Omroa and lost his stumps to one that kept low. Sheldon Charles (01), Kevin Sandiford (01), Esho Persaud (00) and Parsram Singh (00) failed to show any fight handing Berbice, who will play Demerara today at Enmore, full points.
Earlier, Berbice lost seven wickets off 50 overs after they were inserted. Bess provided Essequibo with the early wicket of Davindra Somra (00), but Junior Sinclair and Garfield Benjamin steadied the innings with a second wicket stand of 77. Sinclair benefitted from several dropped catches and a miss-stumping and stroked six fours off 69 balls in a top score of 53, while Benjamin faced 81 balls and hit three fours before he was bowled by Sarwan for 43. Dindyal then had Kevlon Anderson (18) caught by wicketkeeper Jailall before off-spinner Ramkissoon knocked back the stumps of Glasgow (00) to leave Berbice at 164-5. However Alex Algoo cracked 38 (6×4) and Omroa chipped in with 32 (6×4) to beef up the total in the latter stages of the innings. Ramdahin claimed 2-4, Sarwan 2-25, while Dindyal, Ramkissoon and Bess had one each. Essequibo will play the President’s XI today at Police Sports Club gourd Eve Leary.
