After chalking up an impeccable record of 13 fights and no loss, Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy career encountered its first hump when he dropped a unanimous decision to Vito Gasparyan when the two clashed in the quarter final stage of the ESPN 2015 Boxcinco tournament at the Mohegan Sun Casino, Connecticut USA, last Friday evening.
The fight was also regarded as a firm pedestal for Hardy to launch onto the international arena. Reports out of the USA stated that the initial stages of the fight were uninspiring as both boxers appeared to be apprehensive. Nonetheless, as the bout progressed, Gasparyan began to land punches freely while Hardy failed to find corresponding rhythm. All three judges scored in Gasparyan’s favour; Don Trella scored 58-56, while Dick Flaherty and Glen Feldman saw it 60-54 and 59-55 respectively.
Hardy last fought on local soil was in October 2012 when he won on points from Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman. Dubbed ‘Chin Checker’ for his devastating hooks that put his opponents away after crashing into their chins, Hardy fought thrice since moving up to North America and continued his winning ways after defeating Chad Greenleaf (TKO 5), Rahman Mustafa (TKO 1) and Malcolm Terry (TKO 2).
Gasparyan, a 28 years old pugilist from Armenia now resides in California. He has amassed 15 wins (8 by KO), lost 3 times while registering 5 draws. His last fight before the Hardy encounter was a unanimous lost to Jessie Vargas.
Hardy hooked up with renowned manager, Cameron Dunkin when he first landed in the USA but apparently the union was not fruitful and they parted ways. The Guyanese pugilist is now managed by Tim Gibson.
