Prepare to be impressed at this year’s Mashramani parade because the youth groups which fall under the Guyana Police Force ‘A’ Division are ready to take your breath away.
From the Mocha Rising Stars to Grove Kaleidoscope, youths from around Georgetown and on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) are all ready to showcase their talents at this year’s parade.
Taking part in the parade will be the Central Georgetown Rising Stars, Grove Kaleidoscope, Mocha Rising Stars, the Royal Future Generation, the Carnegie Course, Tiger Bay Trend Changers and the Kitty/ North/Sophia/ Alberttown and Queenstown youth group.
Each group has senior police officers within ‘A’ Division working along with them.
Yesterday, Commander for ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, and several of his senior officers, paid the groups a visit to ensure that they are on time in preparing for the parade.
The Commander was impressed when he observed that the groups have already had their costumes designed.
Each group has unique ideas. In Mocha, the teens used calendars and gift bags to make their hats, while the Carnegie Course will be displaying different food items. Another group will be displaying the cosmetology programme.
The groups will be displaying what they were taught at the inception of the programme.
“There will be a float under the umbrella of the GPF. It is a competition between the youth groups to see who will come out the best,” the Commander said.
He added that immediately after Mash, there will be a Youth Expo, where each group will get a chance to showcase their talent. The items made by the teenagers will also be on sale.
The money gained from the Expo will go back to sustain the groups.
The head of ‘A’ Division is on a mission to ensure the Force connects in a positive way with members of the various communities.
He believes that this will lead to a better and improved society.
To ensure this vision is achieved, the senior officer has embarked on an initiative to see the empowerment and development of youths and to ensure they are exposed to positive things that would lead to their holistic development.
The introduction of youth groups in various areas is one of the ways the commander plans to develop the youths.
He hopes to make them self sufficient so that when they leave the group, they will leave with a trade which can be used to improve their lives.
