Dear Editor,
I am simply amazed by the recent written attacks by Sean Devers against the legendary Clive Lloyd.
In one of his articles, Sean Devers accused Lloyd of being senile. In my simple opinion, that statement was utterly disgusting, despicable and disrespectful.
Lloyd’s credentials speak for themselves. He’s one of the most successful Test captains ever. His two World Cup victories at the helm still anoint him. Those accolades can never be tarnished.
It would be remiss of me to allow Sean Devers to continue his attacks on the character of Clive without me defending him.
I went to school with Clive Lloyd at St. Ambrose Primary located at Third and Light Streets, Georgetown. We were classmates for a brief period. Clive was responsible for me being selected to play my first match for the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) against East Bank in the Second Division competition.
I was languishing at DCC before Lloyd returned in 1965. In my first game, I got 9/45 with my medium-pacers. Lloyd was ecstatic and I was humbled for if he had not intervened, I would not have made the team for some time.
Mr. Devers has not shown the general public why it was so important to select Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard. They are both failures, who have continuously flattered to deceive. Their records speak volumes of their continuous failures.
If these two gentlemen were contributing meaningfully, we would not have been in the doldrums at number eight in Tests and about the same level in ODIs.
We are superb in 20 overs – for that is the level of our team’s concentration. This format of cricket suits our bravado and showmanship. Anything over 20 overs is a complete disaster.
The West Indies Board needs to start paying these players by their contributions. If they produce, they get an added incentive. The board also needs to employ a psychiatrist and psychologist to work along with this team, for there are many players of unsound mind who represent the Region.
Education has a lot to do with it. Brain matter is an element in this team. These guys’ convulsions need entangling. We need to have a crescent spanner at all times in the dressing room.
Now look at Roger Harper-a great cricketing brain who went to Queen’s College; Brian Lara-Queen’s Royal College; Jeffery Dujon-Woolmer’s College (Jamaica); Sir Frank Worrell-Harrison’s College.
Education has always played a major part in sport.
Last but not least, children need proper food in growing up. Proper brain food is essential. We have talent in abundance but the madness is perpetual.
