With elections just three months away, leaders from the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM) took to the podium at Stabroek Market square last Friday as part of the ‘Respect My Vote’ campaign of improving voter education.
Among the speakers were A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) parliamentarian and Attorney-at-law James Bond, Chairman of the GYSM Ryan Belgrave and APNU activist and parliamentarian Annette Ferguson.
Chairperson of the meeting, Kibwe Copeland, Junior Vice-chairman of the GYSM and a regional councillor, encouraged all young Guyanese to come out in their numbers on May 11th and exercise their right to vote.
“We fed up of Ramotar! We fed up of Rohee! We fed up of the PPP! And on Election Day we are going to go out and do something about it. We are going to vote them out!” the Regional councilor said as A Partnership for National Unity supporters, young and old, gathered in their numbers.
Belgrave, a teacher by profession, touched on the surge of private schools in Guyana, at the expense of the very public schools that most voters rely on.
“(Citizens), do not vote for yourselves. Vote for your children, for the persons who cannot vote.”
MP James Bond told the gathering “since 1992 we have been hearing how the PPP brought democracy back to Guyana. That they brought back prosperity to Guyana. After 2015, you (voters) can tell your children and grandchildren that you brought democracy! You brought change!”
The GYSM has been in existence for over 50 years and has had Ryan Belgrave as its current National Chairman since August of 2014. It is acknowledged as the youth arm of the PNC/R.
