Demerara defeated the President’s XI by seven wickets when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) inter county U-15 50-over tournament commenced yesterday.
Batting first, the President’s XI were sent packing for 91 in 41.5 overs after winning the toss at the Demerara Cricket Club.
Sachin Singh and Anil Singh added 48 for the opening stand before Sachin was bowled by left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd for 36. He faced 31 balls and hit seven fours. Off-spinner Pradesh Balkishun then disturbed the stumps of Sachin Basdeo (00) to leave the score at 50-2. It then became 55-3 when Balkishun had Yogestir Persaud caught and bowled for one. Joel Spooner then lofted Jospice Jones to mid-off for eight at 69-4 before Anil Singh was dismissed for 13 after facing 81 balls.
The President’s XI never recovered with only Christopher Singh (10) being the only other batsman to reach double figures. Nedd finished with 3-1 off 5.5 overs while Jones claimed 3-22 and Balkishun 2-11.
Robin Williams and Avin Gangadin put together 49 for the first wicket to give Demerara a bright start before Williams was caught off Spooner for 16. Gangadin was then run out for 10, but Adrian Hinds and Alphius Bookie added 22 for the third wicket to take their team closer to victory. Hinds was the last victim for the President’s XI- run out for 15. Bookie (13*) and man of the match Nedd (03*) then saw their team home without further hiccups as they ended on 92-3 in 22.5 overs. Bookie ended unbeaten on 13 and Nedd three. Spooner took 1-11 from eight overs.
The competition continues today with Berbice facing Essequibo at Wales.
