Former national champion and overseas based cyclist Wilbert Benjamin has been honoured by the Flying Ace Cycle club, who started his career as a school boy back in the 80’s as a member of the FACC, though living overseas is still a member of the club.
Benjamin, a one-time former national junior and senior champion who represented Guyana at both levels, now resides in Canada where he still rides and would also still compete whenever he is home in Guyana.
He is now a successful businessman and a top sponsor here, where he operates the Benjamin Sports Stores in his home village of Fyrish Corentyne, Berbice. He single handily organizes three events – the Benjamin Sports Store cycle event; the Sanko Benjamin birthday cycle event in honour of his father and the Irene Benjamin cycle race in celebration of his mother’s birthday. All his events which are organised and coordinated by the FACC are open to cyclists throughout the country.
So far for this year he has organized one race, the Benjamin Sports Store Third anniversary event. He also assists his club and teams in whatever way possible. He is also known to assist national female cyclist Marica Dick and other cyclists over the years with a number of items including tires, Tubes, helmet, clothing and other cycle equipment which would help her in her cycling.
Benjamin, during his hey days along with his brother Gary, who still rides in the veteran category, made a potent combination on the cycling circuit back then.
Benjamin who is home was on hand to receive his prize. He thanked Roberts for the excellent work he has been doing in the county and country on behalf of cycling and pledged his continued support in whatever way possible.
