D’Edward West Coast Berbice fisherman, Latchman Ramnarine is a happy man today after recovering his fishing boat and some of his equipment, which were stolen from the Rosignol Fisherman Coop wharf three weekends ago.
The man who was suspected to have stolen the boat was reportedly nabbed red handed with the vessel at Bartica where he was in the process of modifying it.
The 50 foot boat, which is painted blue at the top and red at the bottom, was fitted with a 48 horse power engine and was fully packed with fishing items, including a 3000 pound seine, which cost over $3.5M. It was ready to sail when it disappeared between the 6th and 7th February last.
Ramnarine believes that during Friday evening, the suspect, who is from Rosignol, Berbice, skillfully released his boat and sailed it to a pontoon, placed his family and belongings on the boat, and drove away.
After the story appeared in the newspapers, some Bartica residents spotted a strange boat which fitted the description of the stolen vessel. A woman and two children were on board and a strange man was busy modifying the vessel.
The residents dialed Ramnarine’s phone number, which was printed in the Kaieteur News, ad tipped off the fisherman.
Ramnarine hired a speed boat and traveled to Bartica early the next day, where he saw the alleged thief and his stolen boat. His ice box, ration and gasoline were missing, as well as most of his seine. His 48 hp engine was however intact.
He contacted the police who nabbed the thief, who was putting up a shed over the vessel. The suspect’s wife and two children were also in the boat. The woman was cooking at the time.
Ramnarine had bemoaned the lack of assistance he had gotten from the relevant authorities, and the lax security at the Rosignol Fisherman’s Co-op Society.
He personally thanked the media for helping him to locate his boat.
The suspect, Terry Paul called ‘Terry’, and ‘Lambada Monkey’ 56, a fisherman of Rosignol Sawmill Dam, West Bank Berbice appeared on Friday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court and was remanded to prison until 17th February.
