Belvedere Primary School led by a brilliant all-round performance from the highly talented Harrinarine Adolphus easily defeated Port Mourant Primary in the final of the GT&T Inter-Primary School softball competition which was held as part of the Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebrations of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC).

Playing at the Area ‘H’ ground and witnessed by a large and supportive crowd, Belvedere won the toss and restricted Port Mourant to 82 for 4 off their allotted 10 overs. S. Khan led with 30, T. Rahaman contributed 20.
Bowling for the champion, Harrinarine Adolphus took 3 for 9 from 2 impressive overs. In response Belvedere primary raced to victory with Adolphus returning with the bat to score 35 not out, while his brother Adrian Adolphus supported with 21 not out.
Earlier, Rose Hall Town was blasted away by Belvedere with the home team only managing 54 in their 10 overs, Harrinarine Adolphus took 3 wickets as only Haresh Singh reached double figures with an impressive 27.
In response, Belvedere reached 55 for 1 as Davesh Singh 24 not out and Arjune Harrinarine 15 not out batted well to secure victory in 6.3 overs.
In the other match, Tain and Port Mourant played to an exciting tie. Batting first, Port Mourant
rattled up 104 in their 10 overs, S. Khan 40 and Ramaldo Persaud 30 were the top scorers. Tain in reply also posted 104 for 4 off their 10 overs with Devendra Singh 34 and Eshwar Persaud 20.
The teams then faced a super over with Port Mourant easing past Tain 14 runs in the over to win the semifinal match. Port Mourant ended at 16 for 1 off five balls. In the 3rd place match, Tain defeated a hapless Rose Hall Town by 23 runs to make sure that the host Primary School ended in the cellar position.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster expressed his pleasure that the tournament was a resounding success and stated that the cricket coaches of the club were able to identify several promising and talented players.
The club hopes to establish from next month a cricket development programme for 40 Under-12 players in an effort to develop players. Speaking directly to the young cricketers, Foster appealed to them to stay in school and obtain an education and to Say No to Drugs and Suicide and most importantly to believe in God.
He also expressed gratitude to the Management of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company for its continued confidence in the club as the company has been an official sponsor of the club since 1992.
Special thanks was extended to Mr R.K. Sharma, Ms Ajni Hackett and Ms Allison Parker of GT&T.
Meanwhile, the female Inter Primary tournament sponsored by Imran Hamid & Sons General Store would be held on Thursday February 26, 2015, at the Area ‘H’ ground. On March 4, the club would also be hosting a day of cricket for teachers at the Area ‘H’ ground.
The main aim of the tournaments is to promote the importance of sports as an alternative to a life on the streets.
