A pilot on his way to an interior location mid morning yesterday was forced to return to the Ogle International Airport after believing that the single engine aircraft he was flying was on fire. The pilot, who is attached to Fenix Airways was on his way to Eteringbang Region Seven and had just taken off in the company’s Cessna 206 (8R-GHB) when his cockpit is said to have filled up with smoke.
The pilot was the only occupant. He was able to turn around and safely land the plane back at the company hangar where checks were made to locate and rectify the problem.
Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Zulphicar Mohamed told Kaieteur News that the Authority received a report about smoke seen aboard the plane. He said investigators from the agency were dispatched to the location to carry out a probe. The aircraft suffered no damage, and the incident is being described as a minor one. Checks were made to the engine area of the craft from where the smoke is suspected to have emanated.
The last time Fenix Airways was in the spotlight was last January when another of the company’s Cessnas had toppled during takeoff at Ogle. A pregnant woman and the pilot onboard that craft were among the people hospitalized for minor injuries.
It was reported by a passenger who was said to be sitting next to the pilot that he was texting during takeoff. The pilot had refuted those claims and GCAA took the initiative to solicit the pilot’s telephone records. The findings were undetermined since GCAA said that the phone record was unable to show whether the pilot was indeed texting.
The company had indicated its intention based on the findings of GCAA’s report to file legal action against the pilot. Passengers were also said to have received compensation for their troubles. (Zena Henry)
