Sponsorship has always been regarded as the oxygen of sporting events and organizers have often beseeched the input of corporate Guyana towards the success of planned programmes. Consequently, the executive of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) have sought and successfully garnered the assistance of several corporate entities towards the success of the boxing card that pits the skills of local multiple champion and world rated fighter, Clive Atwell against Jamaican, Sakima Mullings among other fights.
The card is scheduled for Saturday February 21 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and the organizers are convinced, after noting the intensity of Atwell in camp, coupled with Mullings’ application to training, that fans will get their monies’ worth. They have managed to sell the card to the corporate community and yesterday morning the Avenue of the Republic office of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers was teeming with activity as representatives of several corporate entities doled out sponsorship packages to facilitate the success of the card.
Those organizations that rendered support are GTM, Castrol and Fly Jamaica. Each entity contributed handsomely and the first to make a commitment was GTM. Assistant Manager (Broker Management), Oceda Van Dormen was joined by Marketing Officer, Anuradha Singh and handed over the gift to the (GBBC) organizers. She said that her organization was happy to have been able to offer support from the card. “We serve the society and conversely receive support from that very group so naturally (GTM) is pleased to render support to the card and by extension, the development of young people,” she said.
Brand Manager of Castrol, Nadia Sugrim, handed over a similar monetary package, in the presence of Customer Sales Representative, Devanand Mangal. She also expressed delight at rendering support even as she wished the organizers and other principals well. “Guyoil has always been pleased to render support to the boxing community and this is but a fraction of our involvement,” said Ms Sugrim.
Senior Marketing Officer of Fly Jamaica Airlines, Wesley Tucker, was also at the function and handed over two airline tickets to President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool. This gift will be put up as a door prize and a lucky patron attending the card could win this prize following a draw of ticket stubs. Initially, Kaieteur Sport was informed that the sponsors would be donating just one ticket but Mr. Tucker said that his executives decided that the winner might have a companion with whom he/she may wish to travel and this has prompted the additional ticket.
Fly Jamaica Airlines services several routes including Jamaica, New York and Canada and the lucky patrons will have the opportunity to choose which of these destinations he/she prefers. Further, the airline has donated another ticket, this time to facilitate a judge, Jamaican, Keith Brown, who will be arriving in Guyana to officiate in the Mullings/Atwell bout.
The Airline is celebrating its second anniversary on Valentine’s Day (today) and Mr. Tucker noted that this in apt in keeping with their gift of love to the GBBC. “This is also in keeping with our motto of ‘One Team, One Dream,” concluded the Fly Jamaica executive.
Mr. Abdool was overwhelmed and thanked his many benefactors for their input. “We owe a debt of gratitude to these organizations and I am truly overwhelmed by their generosity,” said Mr. Abdool. He said that Castrol has been on board and have offered (corporate) support ever since the inauguration of Guyana Fight Night. Fly Jamaica was also singled out for their support over the years while GTM’s input was highly also lauded by the GBBC boss.
The other fights on the card are Keeve Allicock/Quincy Gomes in a 6 rounds catchweight affair, Mark Austin against Dexter Gonsalves over 8 rounds, CABOFE middleweight champion, Lindener, Edmond DeClou, faces Dereck Richmond, Sharon Ward against Lorissa Rivas, an American of Trinidadian parentage, in a 6 rounds super/middleweight bout and debutant, Travis Fraser, up against his Barbados based countryman, Charwyn Eswick over 4 rounds.
