Scotiabank’s sponsorship from its initial stage has been significant. The entity continues to give invaluable support to the development of cricket in Guyana and the West Indies at the foundation level with the launching of its 2015 Kiddy cricket programme Thursday at the Guyana Cricket Board office.
Scotiabank’s contribution at this critical learning stage (ages 7-12) has been tremendous and will first place its attention on coaching of the participants and providing information to these pupils on aspects of the game that are not skill specific.
Such as relevant laws of the game, nutrition, self-concept, team work, captaincy, fair play and leadership as well as child protection. Speaking at the launching, Territorial Development Officer, Colin Stuart said this aspect of learning will fall under the theme, “Cricket is my Game-learn it” and will be delivered by an appropriate individual to a group of primary school students. “In addition, some current players will deliver coaching sessions to the targeted pupils under the theme-Meet the emerging player. These sessions will be more skill related and will include sessions such as batting, bowling and fielding,” he added.
Stuart pointed out that during the next school term the programme will progress from coaching and education to competition. “Pupils of primary schools will have an opportunity to match their skills. This progression curve will result in players (who have been identified as more talented) participating in inter-zone and inter- district cricket during the September school term,” he said.
Stuart stated that at least three camps will be held in each County. “The GCB looks forward to a successful programme and would like to thank the other stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education and its Allied Arts Unit, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Guyana Teachers Union and the Child Care Protection Agency.
Marketing Manager of Scotiabank Jennifer Cipriani said it’s a special occasion for Kiddy cricket in Guyana as they prepare to celebrate the sixteenth year since the programme was launched through a fruitful partnership between Scotiabank and the West Indies Cricket Board.
She stated that they have improved the ante on the quality of the camp by including some elements that will make it more meaningful to the beneficiaries. “Cricketers will be exposed to among other things, the history of the game, use and care of equipment and nutrition,” she said.
Scotiabank’s involvement with West Indies cricket began in 1998 as the official bank of West Indies cricket and in 1999 as the exclusive sponsor of Kiddy cricket. “Our Kiddy cricket programme has been educating and positively shaping young minds while at the same time laying the foundation for the game in Guyana and the Region,” she stated. Cipriani expressed gratitude to other stakeholders and said Scotiabank will continue to support Kiddy cricket.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar stated that Kiddy cricket is important since it is the reservoir of West Indies cricket. He reminded those present of Guyana’s success at the 2014 Regional U-15 and U-19 tournaments and urged all to work towards the development of the game which is the pride of the Caribbean people.
Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) Field Secretary Lancelot Baptiste said they are always happy to be involved in cricket adding that GTU was the only entity that organised youth cricket locally in the 50’s.
“Most players that represented that West Indies played GTU cricket which was the cradle of cricket in Guyana. We need to target more schools because many children cannot afford to join clubs,” he said.
President of the GCB Drubahadur thanked Scotiabank and said their efforts have not gone in vain. This year’s programme targets 2400 males and 1600 females.
