A Lethem man on Thursday was placed on $100,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to an assault charge.
Mark Anthony Marks, 31, of 401 Tabatinga, Lethem, denied that on January 20, at Rupununi, he unlawfully wounded Dexter Mentore with the intent to main, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
When he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Jerome Khan, Marks’ Attorney, told the court that his client is a miner and father of three children. He said that Marks was nowhere at the crime scene when the incident occurred and that he has been in police custody for five days fully co-operating with the law officials.
Counsel added that his client will strongly continue to defend himself against the charges.
Prosecutor, Police Inspector Michael Grant, did not object to bail. However, the Magistrate ordered that the accused report to the Lethem Police Station every fortnight commencing from February 27.
The matter will be called again on March 9, at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
