… Says his fate is in the hands of the APNU negotiating team
There is a strong possibility, that “good news” regarding the possible alliance between the Alliance For Change (AFC) and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) will be disclosed sometime today, by either party.
Opposition Leader, David Granger who is very optimistic about the private talks, said at his party’s press conference which was held yesterday that the discussions are intense and both parties are convinced that combined action in the form of a “pre-election coalition” is the best way to remove the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
However, the AFC has made it clear, on several occasions to the media, that it is most certainly leading any alliance it pursues with the APNU. On this premise, Granger was asked if he would surrender his post as the presidential candidate, given his commitment to the greater good of the nation.
“What I can say at this stage is that David Granger’s fate is in the hands of the APNU negotiating team and they are aware of my commitment to establishing a pre-election coalition in the national interest,” the Opposition Leader said.
He reminded though, that both sides have agreed that the details of the negotiations would be released by the general secretaries of the two political parties.
But as it relates to his personal interest, Granger told the media that more important than that is the interest of the nation. The politician said that Guyana must have good governance and a government that enjoys the confidence of the majority of the people.
He disclosed as well that the two teams have been meeting very frequently and the APNU Shadow Cabinet has been briefed on the current stage. He said that the APNU is confident that by the time Valentine Day dawns in the Republic of Guyana, there will be “good news”. He stressed that the opposition is aiming at the removal of the PPP.
The APNU Parliamentarian is also confident that his team will be working assiduously towards this end and that the national interest will be treated as a priority.
“We are prepared; we are working towards a pre-election coalition in this country,” he added.
Faced with the question of whether he believes that the idea of a pre-election coalition can be effectively sold to the APNU constituency if he decides to give up his presidential candidate position, the Opposition Leader said that such a matter has not surfaced in the negotiations.
Further pressed on the matter and being told that such a possibility can very well be political realism, the APNU leader quickly retorted that it is political speculation and said nothing more on that matter.
He emphasized that both sides are aiming for a government of national unity and at this point, the framework for a pre-election coalition is being worked out. He disclosed that both parties and their teams have been meeting frequently even as recent as yesterday morning.
Granger said that the AFC has also indicated that it has a conference today. He has noted also, that in keeping with the Valentine Day theme, the party is desirous of a “loving deal.” (Kiana Wilburg)
