Plantain All-Stars created a major stir Wednesday night in the Mining Town of Linden when the team booted one of the community’s Futsal cream de le crème, Plantain & Cheese from the New Era Entertainment (NEE) Mashramani Futsal competition.
Plantain All-Stars beat Plantain & Cheese, who made the semi-finals in NEE last Futsal tourney, 6-2 at the McKenzie Sports Club (MSC) Hard Court. Danovan Francis completed a helmet-trick for Plantain All-Stars that led 2-1 after the first half. Joshawn Mark and Tervon Archibald added the other two goals for the winners.
For Plantain & Cheese, which turned in a below par performance then complained about moving away from their game plan at the end of the game, Kevin Hope found the back of the net on both occasions as the team bowed out of the competition. The victory for Plantain All-Stars sent them to the semi-finals this weekend.
The night started with another action-packed and thrilling encounter when Eye Rollers narrowly escaped Goals, winning 8-6 in the end. Omar Brewley and Randolph Lewis had hat-tricks for the Eye Rollers while Traydell Lamazon and Jamal Allmon had a goal each.
For Goals, Ulric Caesar and Reon Austin had two goals apiece while Devon Miller and Carlos Blackman had one each. The action-filled encounter was a back-and-forth counter-attacking one from the first whistle with no team letting up moving forward. In the end, the better team clearly prevailed to advance to the next round.
In the final game of the night, Colwin Drakes displayed his superior individual skill for his Silver Bullets team, securing a helmet-trick in a 9-3 mauling of Speightland United. Damian Williams had a hat-trick while Nigel Bowman and Jermaine Samuels scored the other two goals.
Lionel Joseph had two goals with Colvin Allicock also on target for Speightland in a one-sided affair that brought the curtains down on the third night of the competition, which continues this weekend, beginning tonight at the same venue.
The winning team will pocket $300,000 while the runner-up gets $100,000. The third place team gets $75,000 in the tournament with $25,000 set aside for the fourth placed team. The MVP gets a pair of Futsal sneakers and trophy.
