Following two days of well deserved rest, the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship resumes tonight with two sizzling matches that would net the winners semi-final places but more importantly, keep their hopes alive of carting off the top prize.
The action will be at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Bourda and Pele will oppose the Guyana Police Force at 18:00hrs while Slingerz and Riddim Squad will duke it out in the feature attraction starting at 20:00hrs.
Konata Manning patrols the midfield position and has already proven his worth after netting a brace to send Cougars FC packing. He is not a one man show and will surely depend on the support of his teammates, the likes of Captain, Shemroy Arthur and Josh Kamal sealing off the defence cordon.
Then there are Marlan Nedd, O’Kennie Fraser and Devon Charles supported by the wiles of Omalo Williams in the midfield position. The lawmen have played good football so far but tonight’s game will be their sternest test.
They will field an ominous team comprising Rawle Haynes who will want to repeat or eclipse his hat-trick against Haslington Sparta United FC earlier in the tournament. Several other policemen added their input to that demolition and will enter tonight’s game with that burden of replication on their shoulders. These include Allistair Wilson, Anthio Wallace, James Bowman and Rawle Thornhill.
Slingerz, with a team of stars will start as the favourites but will be mindful of the many upsets that have characterized the tournament so far. Dwayne Jacobs is back in the team and is a valuable asset down the left flank while Vurlon Mills is a dangerous striker that could make the difference in this match.
Riddim Squad will also have to contend with the likes of Tichard Joseph, Les Charles Critchlow, Joshua Brown, Devon Millington and Anthony Abrams if they are to lay their hands on the million dollars first prize jackpot.
However, the Mocha based team will hang their hopes on Sceyon Hope, Amos Ramsay and Lylton Ramsay, their three most prolific strikers while Ron Liverpool and Sheldon Hope are bound to throw in their lot.
The tournament has sprung quite a few surprises as the minnows managed to assert their presence among the big boys. Maybe, their luck will run out this evening and then again, the trend might just continue. Football buffs should fill the arena tonight when this question will be definitively answered.
Meanwhile, the organizers have received timely assistance from beverage giants, Banks DIH, who has put up one million dollars for the first prize. Coordinator of activities, Lennox Arthur, has relayed his gratitude to his benefactors while assuring that the donation is integral to the development of his tournament and by extension, local football.
Several other corporate entities have pitched in to ensure the tournament is successful including MACORP, Busta, Sterling Products, John Fernandes, GT&T, TCL, CIDI and the Vieira brothers of Houston. (Michael Benjamin)
