A West Berbice man who is said to be of unsound mind, and who had stabbed another man in his left eye
resulting in his death, has been charged with murder.
Conrad Wilson, 58, of Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice, on Tuesday appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s court to answer to the charge. Wilson is accused of killing 30-year-old Dexter Stanford, called “Killerwood”, of Lot 28 Paradise, West Coast Berbice, on Monday, February 2, 2014. He was not required to enter a plea.
Stanford died on Friday last, after he was stabbed in the left eye on the aforementioned day, by the mentally challenged Wilson, after they became involved in an argument.
It is understood that Wilson would do odd jobs around the community and persons would taunt him, and he would become annoyed.
According to the dead man’s relatives, on the day in question, Stanford left home to purchase a phone card. Wilson was at a rum shop nearby and suddenly grabbed a quarter-inch steel rod and pushed it at Stanford, wounding him in his left eye. Stanford fell to the ground and struck his head.
He started to bleed profusely, was picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital. He was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital but his condition was so severe, that he had to be immediately rushed to the Georgetown Hospital for emergency treatment where he remained in an unconscious condition.
He was unable to breathe on his own and succumbed around 04:30 hrs on Friday.
The family described Stanford as jovial and loving.
A post mortem examination performed on Wednesday by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan revealed that the cause of death was shock and cerebral haemorrhage to the brain.
The suspect was eventually placed on $100,000 bail since he was in custody for a number of days. However, he was unable to post that surety. He will return to court on March 4.
