A suspected thief was caught by some residents in Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday last and dealt a sound thrashing before he was handed over to the police.
The alleged thief has been identified as 21-year-old Keion Charles of Melanie, ECD.
Charles, who is under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), is nursing two stab wounds to his lower abdomen in the Male Surgical Ward.
Kaieteur News was told that Charles was found hiding behind a yard in Enmore late on Sunday. When questioned by the residents, the 21-year-old, who was allegedly holding a ‘juker’, could not provide a satisfactory answer as to why he was there.
He was then dealt a sound thrashing by the residents who then handed him over to the police.
A police source confirmed that the man is a habitual thief, who would roam the village and pounce on unsuspecting victims.
Residents are calling on the community policing Group (CPG) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to conduct regular patrols in the village.
They claimed that “yard thieving” is becoming a norm.
Investigations are ongoing.
