Workers of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Town Councils across the country are to receive a five percent raise on their December 2014 salaries, Government announced yesterday.
According to Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, during his weekly post-Cabinet press conference, the increase would affect workers from the 67 NDCs. with the increases effective from January 1.
Government has also approved increases stipends for councillors but details are still being worked out. The stipends are being considered for Chairpersons and Councillors.
According to Luncheon, however, as quite a number of NDCs are under Interim Management Councils (IMCs), the stipends for Chairpersons and Councillors posed an issue for Cabinet which met on Tuesday and discussed the issue. Details will be forthcoming later, he said.
He said that the difficulty was whether the decision should be based on the work being done or because of the fact the officials are elected. In the case of the IMCs, it clearly posed a dilemma for Cabinet in approving increases.
As he said, details will be forthcoming soon.
