Led by sterling performances from Alphius Bookie and Ashmead Nedd, Georgetown defeated East Coast by 103 runs while East Bank overcame West Demerara by one wicket when the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter Association Under-15 50-over tournament continued yesterday.
Bookie stroked 10 fours in a top score of 75 off 93 balls while Nedd lashed 4 fours and 2 sixes in scoring 51 from 61 balls as Georgetown posted a challenging 210 before they were bowled out in 48.5 overs, batting first at Everest Cricket Club.
The host were reduced to 15-2 before Bookie added 41 with Adrian Hinds who was bowled behind his back attempting a sweep shot for 17. The right handed Bookie then featured in a fourth wicket stand of 99 with Nedd to frustrate the visitors in blazing sunshine.
The pair rotated the strike almost at will and was quick to take advantage of the wayward deliveries. However pacer Tyrese Assanah provided his team with the breakthrough when he uprooted the stumps of Nedd just after the batsman reached his fifty.
Bookie continued to play his shots before he became Assanah’s third victim. Yodester Persaud was the only other batsman that showed fight with 16; extras contributed 22. Assanah swung the ball considerably and was the pick of the bowlers with 3-29; Pradesh Balkishun claimed 2-30 and Arvin Gangadin 2-32.
Anil Singh and Robin Williams started off positively for East Coast with a first wicket partnership of 35 before Williams (13) nicked pacer Qumar Torrington through to wicket-keeper Yodester Persaud.
Left arm spinner Nedd then snapped up three quick wickets to put East Coast on the back foot. They never recovered and were sent packing for 107 in 40.3 overs which included 34 extras. Singh made 19 while Gangadin (14) and Denesh Ali (13) were the only other batsmen that reached double figures. Nedd snared 3-15 and Sachin Singh 2-6.
At Demerara Cricket Club ground, West Demerara took first strike and managed 128 all out in 39.4 overs. Sayendra Pooran scored 20 while extras assisted with 62; Jamal Michael grabbed 4-15 and Tuen Hicks 3-27.
East Bank encountered some nervous moments before reaching their target in 34 overs, ending on 129-9 aided by 49 extras. Michael made 19 and Hicks 17. Jitendra Ghisiwan bagged 4-33 and Satesh Basdeo 2-24. The competition continues today.
