Matches were held on the East Coast Demerara before moving on to the Monnedderlust Football Ground on the West Coast Berbice and then back to the Georgetown Football Club Ground in Georgetown. There were many upsets of the big name teams, characterized by major disappointments of their supporters but in the end those fans that witnessed the matches in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship left the venue satisfied by the quality of play.
The action picks up pace this evening when Pele take on Cougars in the preliminary match to Conquerors against New Amsterdam United.
On paper, both Pele and its adversary present a juicy proposition. The former players will start as the favourite with such names as Captain, Shemroy Arthur, who will be patrolling the defence cordon with the Kamal duo, Josh and Shiek providing capable support. Then there is striker, Deon Alfred and the dependable, Omalo Williams who will present a clear and present danger in the midfield ranks.
The ‘Cougars’ will place a heavy responsibility on their defender, Sherwin Parris with added faith in Clevoy Joseph (midfield) and striker, Alvin Reynolds. Those fans that are tempted to predict a winner based on past records and current status will do well to remember that Santos FC and Victoria Kings and Camptown are now reduced to mere spectators at the expense of three lowly rated teams.
Conquerors will take to the field under the captaincy of Delon Williams and along with his namesake, Odel, in the midfield will present problems for New Amsterdam United. Jermaine Junor, also in the midfield position and defender, Lennox Charles, will also present a foreboding proposition for the team from the Ancient County.
The latter players are not expected to be frightened merely from a player’s list and fans could look forward to counteracting aggression from strikers, Adrian Adams and Jason Drakes coupled with staunch support of their midfielder, Rondell Hazel, while Javaro Santos, known for his acrobatic theatrics, will resume duty between the uprights.
Meanwhile, the luck of the lads from Agricola finally ran out when the action resumed on Friday evening. They were ousted from the tournament 2-0 by a rampaging Western Tigers unit. Deron Benjamin took matters into his own hands and sent in both of his team’s successes in the 14th and 84th minutes.
One match later Rhythm Squad sent Golden Grove packing 3-1 compliments of goals by Sceyon Hope (6), Amos Ramsay (50) and Kevin Agard (70+ 2). Emmit Leacock narrowed the score for his team with a 14th minute strike.
The action continues tomorrow evening at the same venue with Pouderoyen taking on the Police in one match before Den Amstel oppose Pele.
