– Raiders, Street Ballers playing for bragging rights
By Rawle Welch
Many knowledgeables who had the opportunity to watch hosts Pouderoyen Showstoppers clinical mutilation of Patentia Street Ballers defence in their semi-final matchup last Tuesday, are scratching their heads to come up with an effective strategy to stop the West Side juggernauts from capturing the top prize.
They face West Side Ballers in the final of the inaugural West Demerara Guinness ‘Greatest of De Streets’ Futsal Competition tonight, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac and most of the pundits have agreed that only a ‘play call’ that resembles the one the Seattle Seahawks made in the SuperBowl final against the New England Patriots which cost them the game and title could save the guests from suffering a similar fate as Patentia Street Ballers.
The Showstoppers were simply delightful to watch in their semi-final clash and should they duplicate that performance then the chances of fans witnessing a competitive final looks slim.
Dexroy Adams, who booted in a brace, was unstoppable and his skills and pace will definitely be a real bother for the West Side Ballers, while Nathan Allicock’s mesmerizing forays from the back always comes as a surprise.
When Marvin Josiah is added to the equation then the hurdle for West Side Ballers becomes even more challenging.
However, the Ballers should not be underestimated because their strength is in their resilience as Raiders found out.
They are a unit that plays as a team and unlike the other teams usually stays calm in difficult situations so writing them off is not a wise thing to do.
Morgan Denny has shown how lethal he could be with his accuracy and power, while Anthony Harding and Dwayne St. Kitts are always dangerous on the counter attack.
They both have produced solid performances throughout the tournament and with the top prize in plain sight, fans and supporters could see a significant lift in their level of play.
Even though the betters might be swayed by Showstoppers impressive semi-final showing, the mental fortitude of the Ballers might just balance out the betting.
In the third place playoff, Raiders take on Patentia Street Ballers and both teams will be looking to salvage some pride following their semi-final defeats so bragging rights could make this affair an exciting duel.
Adrian Birch, who is the livewire of the team, Ronsdale Knight, Alanzo Bowman and Dexter Marshall will have to display the hunger that they exhibited in getting past Den Amstel if they are to win, while Street Ballers difficulty could be how well they recover from the disappointing loss.
Meanwhile, before the start of play in the competition, there will be four exhibition games with the feature clash bringing together 2014 national champions Queen Street of Tiger Bay versus a West Side All Stars selection.
Kick off time is 19:00 hrs.
