Two exciting matches are fixed for tonight at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground from 7:00pm with favourites Slingerz of the West Side and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) hunting places in the quarterfinals of the Mayor’s Cup Knockout football tournament.
The last-16 playoff stage started last night and continues tonight, while more games are fixed for tomorrow and Monday at the same venue as the competition heats up. Upsets have been the order leading into the last-16 but the favoured teams like Slingerz and GDF will look to stamp their mark and advance.
Today, Slingerz, runner-up to Alpha United in the last Mayor’s Cup, are down to collide with Mahaica in the opening contest. Mahaica, while being responsible for upsetting Santos, can expect a much different opponent. Slingerz boost several players with national experience and have been making a name for themselves with only Alpha really blunting their forward thrust.
With the likes of Tichard Joseph, Vurlon Mills, Joshua Browne, Solomon Austin, Dwain Jacobs and Colin Nelson, Slingerz are expected to be hard to beat.
Mahaica will look to the Roberts boys, Quincy Holder, Shameer Nazir and Devon Harris to lead their charge for another upset if they can pull it off.
The GDF tangle with Ann’s Grove in the nightcap and the soldiers must be mindful of the East Coast unit, especially in the way they manhandled Camptown. They will have Kevon Barry, Quincy Johnson, Maxwell Adams, Linden Roberts, and Carlton Jerrick to propel their charge.
The tough army boys will depend on Eusi Phillips, William Europe, Royan Morrison, Trevon Lythcott and Delwin Fraser to spearhead their hunt.
Fans are promised a treat.
Tomorrow Pele oppose Cougars and Conquerors tangle with New Amsterdam United in an evening dubbed ‘GT versus NA’.
