A 51-year-old man and his two sons accused of beating another family member to death on a plot of land in the Mahaica Creek, appeared in court to face a murder charge yesterday.
The father, Sukdeo Dharandat, and his sons, 22-year-old Eshwardat Dharandat, and Chaitram Dharandat, 20, were taken before Magistrate Zamilla Ali-Seepaul, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
They are charged with murdering 25-year-old Suresh Nandkishore, called ‘Ravo,’ at Handsome Tree, Mahaica Creek on Tuesday, last (February 3). The Dharandats were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Police Inspector John Singh represented the Prosecution while the trio had no lawyer.
Magistrate Ali-Seepaul remanded them to prison and transferred the case to the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court where the father and his two sons are slated to appear on February 17 for report.
According to reports, the now dead man, his father Bhopaul Nandkishore, 52, and brother Parmanand were in the process of erecting a fence on a plot of land when a heated argument erupted between them and the other family, and led to a fight.
It was reported that the older Dharamdat, with whom the Nandkishores have a land dispute, came as they were working and appeared to have no objection. But the 51-year-old reportedly returned with his two sons, one of whom was armed with a cutlass.
The men reportedly picked up two of the posts that were meant for the fence and began lashing the Nandkishores about their bodies.
The now dead man reportedly tried to walk away, but was cornered and dealt several lashes to his head, blows that cracked open his skull. The father and his older son, both sustained injuries while it was reported that at least two members of the opposing family, Sukhdeo Dharamdat included, received treatment for injuries they sustained during the melee.
Bhopaul Nandkishore, 52, has not regained consciousness. He is in a coma at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) while his son Parmanand, who played dead to survive the onslaught, was admitted to the hospital with multiple wounds about his body.
