– court hears
A 19-year-old girl, who reportedly attempted to purchase chicken at a popular city fast food outlet with a counterfeit $5000 note earlier this week, has been released on $5000 bail.
The teen, Lilowtie Diyal, who appeared yesterday before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, is said to have approached cashier Rhonda Sancho at an establishment at Camp and Middle Streets, and asked for a serving of chicken.
Through Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant the court heard that the teen pulled out a $5000 and handed it to Sancho, but the cashier observed that something was amiss with the bill.
The cautious cashier informed her supervisor of her suspicion, and police were summoned to the outlet.
Continuing, Grant said that the teen was taken into custody along with the note which was inspected and proved to be a counterfeit. The Prosecutor reported that based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the charge was instituted against Diyal.
Nonetheless, Diyal denied the allegations.
The teen’s lawyer, Patrice Henry, asked the court to release her on reasonable bail. He said she resides with her parents at Enmore Pasture, East Coast Demerara, and has an unblemished record. He went on to say that Diyal had been in custody since Monday, and argued that it is not a case where she was searched and found with more currency.
His application was not objected to by the prosecutor, thus bail was granted.
The Prosecution was granted two weeks to file statements and the teen will appear in court again on February 18.
