With the powerlifting season set to get underway this weekend, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) yesterday received a timely boost from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS).
Minister Dr Frank Anthony presented three complete sets of weightlifting equipment to GAPF President Peter Green totaling just over 2400 lbs and worth over G$6,000,000. Speaking at the simple handing over ceremony, Dr. Anthony said the ministry is pleased to be associated with the GAPF.
“Since we donated the first set of equipment to this organization a few years ago, we have seen rapid growth in the sport and we are happy with these investments, our athletes have put Guyana on the map in a short time,” he added.
The minister stated that Guyana didn’t have internationally certified weights and the GAPF approached the ministry which decided to furnish them with the equipment. “This gesture will move the sport forward and more international competitions can be held here,” the minister pointed out.
He indicated that plans are on stream to build a centre to facilitate the sport. “We want to erect a centre where strength training can be done. The ministry already did some drawings and has estimated it so we are hoping to start soon,” Anthony said.
Green stated that this is a special day for the sport in Guyana adding it is a culmination of a long term promise made by the ministry. “One of the sets will be used on Sunday when we stage our novice and junior championships at the National Gymnasium,” he informed.
The GAPF head explained that they are now in a better position to bid for international competitions. “Guyana will be taking part in the Commonwealth championship in Canada later this year and will bid to host the tournament in 2017. We will also be hosting the Caribbean championships in March and the South American Championship in August 2016,”said Green.
