They are members of the Guyana Police Force but those footballers proved that they have a softer touch when they turned in a classic performance to take the spoils 7-0 and eliminate Haslington Sparta United FC from the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship when the action continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground last Wednesday evening.
One match later, the GFC engaged the Uitvlugt FC and prevailed by a 3-2 margin to also stay in contention for the top prize. The policemen owe a debt of gratitude to Rawle Haynes who netted a hat trick in the 43rd, 47th and 78th minute while Allistair Wilson (7), Anthio Wallace (29), James Bowman (38) and RawleThornhill (70) were the other police marksmen.
GFC went ahead following a double by Dwayne Lawrence (10, 58) with support from Calvin Shepard (28). Shamal Smith (37) and Jamal Harvey (75) narrowed the score for Uitvlugt, albeit inconsequentially.
The game started at a fast clip and policeman, Wilson, wasted little time in distinguishing the two teams. His firm right foot shot sped along the ground and left the Haslington goalie transfixed long after the ball became trapped in the network.
Another policeman, Kester Dundas, patrolling the left flank, then sent an ominous warning to his adversaries with a stiff shot to their goal which the custodian Darius Frank, did well to scoop up. The response came from Rasleigh Morrison who blasted in a firm left foot shot that sent the Police custodian diving to his right to intercept.
All this time the lawmen constructed classic passes with Winston Tanner and Alistair Wilson being the chief architects but they were denied following good defensive work by Garson Baker and Deon Rodney.
The second (Police) goal came from a sliced shot off the boot of Wallace and before the first session was done the lawmen had netted two more times to go in at the break with a 4-0 advantage. The second session was a replica of the first with the Police ball weavers overwhelming their opponents and befuddling them with tactical moves and passes.
The Police enjoyed a field day and had all the chances for a more definitive victory but for some tardiness as the game wound down. Nevertheless, the lawmen managed to add a further three goals to their tally for a commendable win.
The teams enjoyed a well-deserved rest last evening and when the action resumes tonight, Golden Grove will attempt to replicate the victory over Grove Hi Tech when they clash with Riddim Squad while Western Tigers challenge Agricola.
Randy Stoby had been the man to make the difference for Golden Grove when he stitched in their lone goal against Grove Hi Tech and his teammates will hope he brings that form to tonight’s game.
Agricola Red Triangle will also ride its luck after defeating Victoria Kings 2-1. That victory was even more meritorious after it was noted that Victoria Kings had drawn first blood with a firm kick from captain, Calvin DeSouza.
They held on to that lead right up to the 60th minute when John Gordon equalised the situation. Gordon then scored the decider in the 83rd minute, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
The dapper striker will find out that tonight’s game will be contested among tougher and more skilful footballers, the likes of Solomon Austin, Sherman David coupled with the dependable Dereck Carter between the uprights. An action packed encounter is, therefore anticipated.
