A 15-year-old boy is now dead while his 16-year-old friend who was in the vehicle with him is in a critical,
but stable condition in the New Amsterdam Hospital, after the 4×4 Toyota surf PMM 6390 he was driving crashed and flipped over around 03:15hrs on Wednesday on the Crabwoord Creek Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
The dead teen was Akash Mohan, called “Boye”, 15, an unlicenced driver of Number 72 Village, Corentyne, Berbice and a school drop out of the Lutheran High School, Upper Corentyne.
Injured is lone passenger and good friend, Andrew Sooknanand, 16, of Kingston, Corriverton, Corentyne.
According to information the vehicle was travelling north along the Skeldon Public Road at a fast rate when the driver lost control and skidded off the road and slammed into a Ford Pick Up GJJ 9738 owned by Rishi Singh. This vehicle was parked on the opposite side of the road. The vehicle then flipped over and crashed into the fence of a Mandir, damaging it in the process.
The two occupants who sustained severe injuries were picked up and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where Mohan was pronounced dead on arrival. Sooknandan, who sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body, was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam hospital in a semi-conscious state.
Up to press time efforts were being made to transfer him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
An excavator had to be used to remove the badly mangled vehicle from the trench.
Information revealed that the youth took the vehicle belonging to saw miller Mahindra Baichan, called “Cardo”, of Crabwood Creek, collected his friend and was driving in a reckless manner during the night.
Mohan, it is reported, had left his home at No 72 Village and was living at Baichan Sawmill for some time. It was understood that the teen’s father passed away late last year and his mother had taken somebody else.
It was also understood that the young man was living with a brother, but had started to follow wayward company and so was sent to live with Baichan whom they thought would have some control over him. He was to have commenced working at the Sawmill soon.
Investigations are continuing.
