Police have detained a minibus driver who is believed to have stabbed a colleague to death
early yesterday morning.
The man was arrested hours after Yamsham Ram, called ‘Yankee’, succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital while receiving treatment.
According to reports, Ram, 43 of Foo’s Scheme, Friendship, East Bank Demerara and the suspect; were engaged in an argument about 01:15 hours at Timehri.
During the argument Ram, who was also a minibus driver was stabbed about his body. He was picked up and rushed to the hospital where he later died.
Kaieteur News understands that the altercation, which led to the fatal stabbing, stemmed from a long standing feud between the two drivers.
A source indicated that the two men were feuding over a computer box that was stolen from a minibus.
A friend of Ram’s, who did not wish to be named, told this newspaper that she did not know what actually took place early yesterday morning.
She said that she only learnt about Ram’s demise later when she called his cellular phone and someone else answered it.
“When I called it another bus driver answered and said that he was at the hospital. When I checked at the hospital, he was on a machine, like he was only waiting for somebody to come before he died,” the friend stated.
She said that from the little she heard, the argument started at the Timehri Bus Park in Georgetown and ended outside a snackette at the airport at Timehri.
The woman said that the assailant confronted Ram as he was coming out of the snackette with a cup of beverage.
“He fire a juk at Ram and Ram just throw the Ovaltine in he face. They say when Ram turned away, the man come from behind he with a knife and stab he.”
The woman said that she was told that Ram grabbed a lug spanner and lashed his assailant, but the man somehow managed to throw him to the ground where he inflicted several stabs to his body.
She said that Ram returned to Guyana involuntarily about six years ago and was living alone.
According to the woman Ram’s close relatives, including his seven daughters, who are all overseas were informed about his death and are scheduled to arrive in Guyana shortly.
Meanwhile, police acting on information arrested the suspect later yesterday.
