Play in the Mayor’s Cup Knockout football tournament has reached its last-16 playoff stage with four straight nights of competition set for the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground staring tomorrow.
The tournament has produced a number of upsets thus far. Big question, will they continue? Fans are encouraged to troop to the GFC ground where the excitement promises to be fever pitch. Tomorrow Riddim Squad face Golden Grove at 7:00pm and Western Tigers oppose Agricola at 9:00pm in the double header. Fans may well note that Golden Grove of the East Coast had upset Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank, can they repeat? The East Coast boys will sure have that in mind. Agricola booted Victoria Kings in another upset and the word is they intend to declaw the Tigers; easier said than done.
Saturday, leading West side club Slingerz are down to collide with Mahaica in the opening contest. Mahaica were responsible for Santos being on the sidelines, so Slingerz should be mindful. The mighty GDF play Ann’s Grove in the nightcap and the soldiers need to be very watchful and prepared because their opponents manhandled Camptown. The tough army unit will not be in a mood for slip ups but the East Coast side has proven they can cause problems.
Sunday the action continues with Pele versus Cougars and Conquerors tangle with New Amsterdam United in an evening dubbed ‘GT versus NA’. While in the past city sides have been in the ascendancy, there is the big possibility the upset nature of this tournament so far could very well continue.
Monday Pouderoyen face off with the winner of the Police – Haslington game that was played last evening, while Den Amstel battle the winner the GFC – Uitvlugt contest also last night that would have completed the last 16 teams left in the tournament.
Solomon Austin (W Tigers), Tichard Joseph (Slingerz), Eusi Phillips (GDF), Shemroy Arthur (Pele) and Eon Alleyne (Conquerors) are among the leading players on show over the next four days who are expected to play key roles in their teams’ fortunes.
Friday February 13, Sunday 15, Wednesday 18 and Sunday 22 are the remaining playing days for the tournament, all at the GFC ground.
Teams are reminded to provide their own physiotherapist in the event of injury to their players.
