GPSU approved as observers for May 11 polls

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) has been approved as a Local Observer Group for the upcoming elections, the body announced Tuesday.
According to the union, as a stakeholder in the Guyanese society, it has an abiding interest in free and fair elections of the national government and parliament. As such, it applied for Domestic Observers’ Status for the upcoming elections slated to be held on May 11, 2015.
GPSU said that Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has since responded positively to the accreditation application.
“The union has started preparations in this regard and has informed its membership to submit their required information so that the process can commence in a timely manner,” GPSU said yesterday in a statement.
GECOM in its approval letter to GPSU’s President, Patrick Yarde, warned that the union has to adhere to the terms and conditions governing accredited observers.
GPSU has to submit a list of names of persons they want as observers.
Early elections to choose a new Government are being held after the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) faced a no-confidence motion in December and President Donald Ramotar prorogued Parliament, with the hopes that the stalemate would result in talks.
However, last month, in the face of mounting pressure, domestic and international, President Ramotar announced May 11 as the date for early General and Regional Elections.
